What is an OctreoScan®?

Time Required:
Day 1: 45 minutes
Day 2-3: 1-2 hours.

What is an OctreoScan®?
OctreoScan® is an imaging agent that can help find primary and metastatic neuroendocrine tumors.

Why do I need an OctreoScan®? Your doctor needs this test to help with your diagnosis and any treatment you might need.

How do I prepare for my OctreoScan®?
No initial preparation is needed. (After the initial pictures, you may be asked to take a mild laxative if you need to return for another set of pictures at 48 hours after the injection).

What can I expect during the test?
Day 1 - Inject medicine
Day 2 - Pictures at 24 hours
Day 3 - Possibly more pictures at 48 hours

Before scanning, you will be asked to empty your bladder. You will be asked by a nuclear medicine technologist to lie on your back on the examining table. You can breathe normally during the scan, but you will be asked to stay as still as possible. A number of different pictures or images will be taken of different locations on your body. The scanning process usually takes between one and two hours. Additional imaging sessions may be scheduled to clarify and/or compare the images.

What do I do after my OctreoScan®?
The nuclear medicine physician will study and analyze all of the pictures taken. He/she may ask questions and examine you. Your referring physician will discuss the results with you.
